craftsmanship
The concept behind Chaïa is that each collection is inspired by a different part of the world, and a portion of the proceeds is given back to the communities where the designs and craftsmanship originate.
All of our beaded bags are hand beaded in India. Countless hours of careful detail are put into each beaded bag.
WHAT IS "ADDA"?
“Adda” refers to the wooden embroidery frame that holds fabric firmly in place, ensuring smooth, uninterrupted stitching. This tool is essential for intricate hand embroidery techniques like Aari and Zardozi, allowing artisans to craft precise, detailed designs.
A TIMELESS CRAFT
Adda embroidery is a treasured tradition in Indian textile art, passed down through generations. More than embellishment, it reflects the patience and skill of artisans who create detailed patterns using fine threads, beads, sequins, and metallic accents. Each piece carries a story, a history, and a legacy of craftsmanship.
The embroidery is crafted with a specialized hooked needle called an ‘Aari,’ designed for detailed threadwork and bead placement. This technique enhances precision, resulting in intricate, shimmering designs.
ORIGINS & HERITAGE
Dating back to ancient times, Adda embroidery has been associated with royalty and luxury. The technique evolved from early Indian civilizations, with historical traces found in the Indus Valley. Over centuries, it became a hallmark of regal attire, showcasing wealth and status.
Though embroidery styles have modernized, the essence of crafting on the Adda frame remains unchanged, preserving its deep-rooted cultural significance.
For our Brazil Collection, each piece of clothing is carefully hand crocheted in Brazil, and proceeds go back to children in need in Brazil.
WHAT IS CROCHET?
Crochet is a textile art that uses a single hooked needle to loop yarn into interconnected stitches, forming fabric. Unlike knitting, which employs two needles, crochet relies on one hook, giving artisans freedom to shape intricate patterns, textures, and motifs with precision.
A TIMELESS CRAFT
Crochet is cherished across cultures as both functional and decorative. From delicate lace doilies to cozy blankets and fashion pieces, it embodies patience, creativity, and skill. Each handmade item carries the maker’s touch, often passed down through generations as heirlooms or gifts that symbolize care and connection.
TOOLS & TECHNIQUE
The craft centers on the crochet hook, available in various sizes and materials, paired with yarns ranging from fine cotton to thick wool. By combining stitches—chains, doubles, trebles—artisans build complex designs, often enhanced with colorwork, motifs, or embellishments.
ORIGINS & HERITAGE
Though its exact beginnings are debated, crochet gained prominence in Europe during the 19th century, evolving from earlier lace-making traditions. It became a symbol of domestic artistry, with women crafting garments and decorative pieces that reflected both utility and beauty. Today, crochet thrives as a global practice, blending tradition with modern innovation, while preserving its cultural resonance as a handmade art form.
